Sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of the Stonyhurst Shop. In partnership with Zero Negativity we've created a collection of organic and recycled garments and accessories that embodies the "Quant Je Puis" motto of the school. It is our responsibility to do as much as we can to protect the environment and make positive changes in pursuit of those aims.

All the garments available on the site are of an organic and/or recycled nature. The impact of switching to these materials is huge. Here's just one example:

  • A conventional cotton hoodie requires nearly 10,000 litres of water to produce. You read that right, ten thousand litres of water for a single cotton hoodie.
  • Our eco-friendly hoodies are made from 80% organic cotton and 20% recycled plastic. They use just 700 litres of water in production, a reduction of a huge 93%. They save enough water to sustain 10 people for a full year, as well as recycling around 6 plastic bottles. All that from one hoodie!
  • Using organic and recycled materials results in a smaller carbon footprint too. Each hoodie saves around 20kg of CO2 being released into the atmosphere, which is the same as driving 220km in a Ford Fiesta! Not only that but they use less energy in production too, each hoodie saving enough energy to keep a 60w lightbulb lit for 4 days!

Every year we'll publish a report detailing the amount of environmental savings you've made by ordering items through the shop, and we can guarantee that impact will be huge!

Aside from the environmental factors, we're also supporting local business by partnering with Zero Negativity who are a small family company based in nearby Blackburn. Them being nearby also reduces the carbon footprint of having orders delivered from further away! They don't use any plastic packaging and offset the carbon footprint of all the deliveries they make by planting trees right here in North West England.

They work only with factories who have the highest ethical standards, and all clothing products have some kind of certification regarding their envronmental and ethical status.

This can range from PETA approved Vegan friendly status to Fair Wear Foundation certification which means everyone who works in those factories is paid fairly and the factory is held to various labour standards. Click the links to read more about them. These are just some examples of the different certifications, there are lots! Over time we will indicate on every product page the certifications they hold, and if you want any more information in the meantime then please get in touch via the contact page.
